Obituary

Waterville- Joseph H. Barnes, 84, a life-time farmer and Waterville resident passed away peacefully at his home with his loving wife of 62 years and his children at his bedside, on Thursday September 5, 2019.He was born on the family farm located on Barnes Road in North Brookfield, on November 20, 1934, the son of the late T. Raymond and E. Ruth Furner Barnes. Joe attended North Brookfield School and was a graduate of the Waterville Central High School. Joe was raised on the family farm with his siblings, learning his life-long core values of family, hard work and farming. As young man in the 1950’s, he had been a member of the North Brookfield Fire Department. On December 29, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Oriskany Falls, he married his soul-mate Joan Jasek. In later years Joe followed in the footsteps of his forefathers and brothers and together he and Joan purchased their family farm on Upper White Street. They stayed true to the values of being a “farm family.” They raised their seven children on the farm passing onto them the values of family, hard work and farming. One of the family’s proudest moments was when Joe’s daughter, Terri, was named Oneida County Dairy Princess of 1985. Joe not only had a loveof his family, but the community as a whole. He was a charter member of the former Deansboro Lions Club. Joe spent numerous years on the Town of Sangerfield Planning Board, just retiring from the board due to his illness. Joe was born of Irish Heritage, but maybe with Joanie’s help became a master Polka Dancer. Together they traveled to many polka events having the “time oftheir lives.” Joe would always have a saying to keep all in perspective: “as you shall sow, so shall you reap,” and “no matter what happens today, the sun will shine tomorrow.” Well known in the community, Joe had an infectious smile and laugh, and many always enjoyed Joe’s brand of humor or antidotes that he shared with others. Joe especially loved family gatherings and always looked forward to the summertime Barnes Family Reunion. It is always held at the family’s homestead, and was started by his dad, Raymond. He was a life-long parishioner of St. Bernard’s Parish. Both Joe and Joanie are proud of the farm they developed, the crops that were harvested, the cows that produced milk, but most of all their children who grew to be special in each their own way, the most precious “crop” that could come from the Joe Barnes Farm.Joe is survived by his devoted wife and soul-mate of 62 years, Joanie; his children, James (Gayle) Barnes of Waterville, Raymond (Lisa) Barnes of Fayetteville, Brenda (Lenny) Coffman of Waterville, Deborah (Donald) Geary of Whitesboro, Donna ( Lyle) Wright of Oriskany Falls, and Terri (Mike) Pilon of Joelton, TN; his grandchildren; Stephanie Geary, Anna Barnes and her companion Josh Hotton, Joseph Coffman and Emma Barnes; a great-grandson Gavin Hotton; sister-in-law, Vera Barnes, of North Brookfield; his brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Sally Barnes of Madison. Numerous nieces, nephews and life-long close friends also survive Joe.He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Ruth; his beloved daughter, Mary Catherine Kovalick; his siblings, Roger Barnes, Lester Barnes, Isabelle Ders, Phil Barnes, and Delmar Barnes.Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday from 2-6 PM at the Burgess andTedesco Funeral Home of Waterville. Prayer services will be at 10:30 AM on Monday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM, at St. Bernard’s Church of Waterville. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bernard’s Church, Waterville, NY.

Joe was the leader of my second family. The Barnes' "adopted" me in the 70s, when I joined in musical bands with Jim and Ray. Many nights we would get home so late that I would just sleep on the couch. Joe jokingly referred to me as his third son, problem child, etc and I will miss that. A class act all the way. Thank you for your life, and the contributions you made. Your family will always be mine.
